The Southern University Hall of Fame Commission will induct 14 members in the 2014 class at a banquet on Friday, November 7th, at the Belle of Baton Rouge Casino Atrium. The new members will also be recognized at the Saturday, November 8th game vs. Texas Southern at 6:00 pm.
This year's inductees include:
Harvey A. Dority, 1965-1969, Men's Basketball. 1965 SWAC Championship Team member.
Zebedee Ducre, 1965-1969, Men's Basketball. Potter Award (Best 6th Man in the SWAC), 1965 SWAC Championship Team member, NAIA All-Tournament team, Team Captain.
Lee Dell Woods, Jr., 1972-1975, Men's Basketball. 1975 Most Valuable Player Junior Varsity Basketball, SWAC Tournament champion and NAIA tournament participant.
Verdis Theus, 1960, Football. Member of 1960 Black College National Championship team in 1960, Most Improved Player Award.
William “Bill” Blount III, 1987, Football.
David Geralds, 1965-1969, Football. Played professionally for the National Football League's (NFL) Houston Oilers and Detroit Lions, the Saskatchewan Roughrighers of the Canadian Football League, and the Birmingham Stallions of the United States Football League. He was a four-year letterman at Southern University, where he was named Outstanding Defensive Lineman his senior year.
Esau Lolis, Sr., 1972-1975, Track and Field. Holds the Southern University 3-mile Record, SWAC Most Valuable Distance Runner, 1973, won the Outdoor Spring 1974 SWAC Championship in 3000 Meter Steeple Chase with a then record time of 9:25.
Donald Anthony “Don” Haines, Ph.D. 1969, Football. Started the first Baseball program at Southern University in New Orleans (SUNO) where he was the head baseball coach.
Jimmy McNeal, 1969, Track and Field. Recognized for service to Southern University Track and Field for assisting the team with various fundraisers, recruiting, and marketing and promotions.
Sheldon Dennard, 1965-1969, Football. Four year starter, Outstanding Freshman, All-SWAC, and Team Captain.
Major Lester Harris, 1961-1963, Football. Two year starter and 3-time Defensive Player of the Game award.
Quincy Richard, Jr., Esq., 1999-2003, Football. Team captain--2003 SWAC Champion (12-1), Bayou Classic MVP 2002 and 2003, 2003 SWAC Offensive Player of the Year, First Team Black College All-American, 2003 A.S. “Jake” Gaither Award (referred to as the Black College “Heisman”), 2003 Black College National Player of the Year
Daryl C. Battles, 1987-1989, Football and Basketball. Played 14 years professionally across Europe, 1988 2nd Team All- SWAC, 1989 1st Team All- SWAC, #3 in NCAA in 1989 (13.5 rebounds/game).
John Brother Cade, Jr., Recognized for service to Southern University Track and Field as official scorer for meets.
