Softball to begin search for new head coach

Southern University will begin its search to name a new head softball coach to replace former coach Nancy Marshall, whose tenure ended after the 2013 season.

Marshall, who has served as softball's head coach since the sport's debut in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in 1997, finished the season 6-42 and the Lady Jaguars missed the conference tournament in each of the last two seasons.

"We will post the position for national search in the coming days and expect to have a new coach approved by July 1," said Dr. William Broussard, Director of Athletics.

During a career that spans 17 years, Marshall, a SU alumnus and the 1992 leading scorer on the women's basketball team, led Southern to two SWAC titles in 1999 and 2003 and was named the SWAC's Coach of the Year in those years.

Marshall also contended for five other SWAC titles but lost to eventual champion Mississippi Valley State in 2004-2005 and 2007-2009.

Marshall's career win total sits at 359, which include two seasons where the Lady Jaguars won 31 games – the highest single season win total in Southern softball history.
