BATON ROUGE -- The 48th Annual
Pelican Relays will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at AW Mumford Stadium
on Roscoe Moore Track.
17 collegiate women's and men's teams, along with
11 high school girls and boys track teams are set to participate in this annual
event at Southern University.
"We are expecting an exciting (Pelican) relays",
says Southern head track coach, Johnny Thomas. "There are some very talented
athletes set to run, including some of our own. A number of regional qualifiers
will be here Saturday."
The Pelican Relays, usually a 2-day event, has been scaled
down to one day, the first since the inaugural Pelican Relays, 47 years ago.
"The SWAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships are next
week in Troy, AL, so we scaled the event down by taking out several events.
We are going to use the Pelican Relays as a tune up for the SWAC," says
Thomas.
"I think that this year's Pelican Relays are going
to be a Fan-Fun-Fantastic day! The meet is toned down, so there will be no dead
periods in the meet. From the little small kids, to the master's, it will
be a great event and time for everyone."
Cost for the event is $5 for adults, and children under 10
are free.
